In the modern world, we’re surrounded by numerous types of technology that are available for providing a network connection to our homes and businesses, with advancements happening constantly. While this opens up a range of possibilities and capabilities, it can also be difficult to sift through and understand each type. That’s why it’s important to understand each type of technology, as well as the benefits they offer for you.
You may have heard of GPON technology before, but it’s likely that you may not fully understand what it is or what it can do. This week’s uGrid Network blog is here to help break it down for you!
uGrid Network specializes in technology connection, from GPON technology to ONT solutions and even accessories. We can help you find technology connection solutions that make sense for your business, improving your efficiency and network capabilities. What Is GPON?
Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (GPON) is a type of point-to-multipoint access mechanism. It is used to build Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) networks that connect subscribers to the local internet service provider (ISP) serving office. The main characteristic of GPON is its use of passive splitters in the fiber distribution network, which aims to enable one single feeding fiber from the provider’s central office to serve multiple homes and small businesses. This makes GPON technology the most fiber-efficient option, providing a cost-effective method that delivers streaming for video content and online applications with a significant quantity of bandwidth.
GPON technology utilized the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) for added security purposes, and it also supports all types of Ethernet protocols.
How Does It Work?
When telecommunications first began to emerge, these connections and networks were built using copper cables, which served as the physical medium to transmit the necessary signals. However, over time, the types of messages and signals being transmitted changed from voice messages and telegrams to data transmission, which meant the network connection changed with it.
Today, instead of physical copper cables, we see fiber optics being used for network connections. Due to its ability to provide higher speeds and increased efficiency, this made more sense for the changing needs of networks.
The fiber optic technology was eventually spread out, first reaching businesses and public buildings, and eventually even individual homes.
GPON technology operates using a fiber optic connection. It is designed using multiple elements, with the first being the main optical transmitters called the optical line terminal (OLT). This is located within the telecommunication building, or the central office. The OLT has a laser, which injects photons from the central office to a fiber optic cable that’s made of glass and plastic, which ends at a passive optical splitter.
This splitter begins to break down the signal from the central office into numerous signals that are eventually distributed to multiple customers.
If the operator so chooses, a single signal can be split twice; however, this may be limited in order to ensure that the network signal is of the highest quality.
In general, optical fiber technology is more energy-efficient, generally future-proof technology. Our professionals at uGrid Network can help you determine whether GPON technology is right for you and your network connection needs.
Why Choose GPON Technology?
There are many reasons why GPON makes sense for users. The first is that it provides the end user with the ability to consolidate multiple services onto a single fiber transport network, reducing costs and infrastructure while also increasing bandwidth.
GPON networks are ideal for environments with separated nodes, points, or buildings. The benefits provided by GPON are rapid, flexible, mass-market fiber deployments at the lowest possible cost for rollout.
The flexibility of GPON also carries over into the way service providers can lay out the network. There are many possible combinations, and GPON allows your service provider to choose the best layout for your specific goals and situation.
Depending on your specific needs and goals, our team at uGrid Network can help you determine whether GPON devices may be a good fit for your home or business.
Specific Benefits of GPON
As mentioned above, GPON offers a range of benefits for large businesses and individual households. Some of these benefits include:
- Supporting triple-play services
- Supporting high-bandwidth transmission to break down the “bandwidth bottleneck”
- Provides long-reach services
- Supports integrated services in a positive way
- The clear choice for many international connection needs
- Provides a fully optical architecture option
- Consists of both OLTs and ONTs which makes for a very efficient, smooth connection
